The Best Time to Climb Mount Rinjani

The Best Time to Climb Mount Rinjani

Planning your trek to Mount Rinjani? One of the most important things to consider before lacing up your hiking boots is timing. Rinjani offers stunning views and incredible trekking experiences, but choosing the right time of year can make a huge difference in safety, scenery, and overall enjoyment.

Let’s break it down so you can plan your adventure at the perfect time.

The Official Trekking Season

Mount Rinjani is open for trekking from April to December each year. During this time, the weather is generally dry, and the trails are safe and accessible. The park is closed from January to March due to the rainy season, which brings risks like landslides, flooding, and poor trail conditions.

☀️ April to May – Fresh and Green

This is the beginning of the trekking season, just after the rainy season ends. The landscape is lush, green, and fresh, with waterfalls flowing and clear skies most of the time. Trails are less crowded, making it perfect if you want a peaceful and scenic trek.

Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, and early-season adventurers.

🌤️ June to August – Peak Season

This is the busiest period for trekking Mount Rinjani. The weather is at its most stable—cool mornings, clear views, and minimal rain. However, it’s also the most crowded time, especially during Indonesian holidays.

Best for: Travelers who want perfect weather and don’t mind sharing the trail with others.

🍂 September to December – Calm and Clear

The post-peak months still offer great trekking conditions, but with fewer crowds. The weather remains dry until around mid-December, although rain may start to appear gradually. This is a good time if you prefer a quieter experience without sacrificing too much on weather quality.

Best for: Late-season trekkers who want balance between good weather and solitude.

⚠️ Avoid January to March

The national park is officially closed during these months for safety reasons. The trails can become dangerous, and visibility is poor due to heavy rainfall.
